Treaty of Tripoli approved by the American representative. This followed acts of piracy against merchant shipping from the United States. It required tribute to be extorted from the United States by the Barbary states to take effect. This Treaty could be regarded as a Hudna, or temporary truce as defined under Islamic law. 10 February 1797
