ICLA Joins Campaign To Free Gilad Shalit

Shalit Thumb

The International Civil Liberties Alliance (ICLA) has now formally joined the Jewish Internet Defense Force (JIDF) campaign to free kidnapped Israeli citizen Gilad Shalit. On August 28th, 2009, kidnapped Israeli Defense Force soldier Gilad Shalit will celebrate his 23rd birthday.  But for the fourth year in a row, it appears he will most likely celebrate this important milestone far away from his home in Israel.  Shalit was kidnapped by Hamas in the summer of 2006 and has remained in captivity since. Negotiations for his release are ongoing.

The current campaign will utilize Twitter.  ‘Tweet4Shalit’ is a virtual grassroots movement inspired by the struggle Gilad Shalit must endure daily as a prisoner of war and as a victim of Islamic extremism. ‘Tweet4Shalit’ is a 24 hour Twitter event in which thousands of supporters will sign onto Twitter to tweet the hashtag ‘#GiladShalit’ with the goal of making Gilad a top ten Twitter ‘Trending Topic’ on the day of his birth.

Social networking is a way to inspire change and raise awareness and we plan to do just that. We echo the JIDF’s call to invite everyone, everywhere to spread the word about ‘Tweet4Shalit’ and join us on Twitter, all day (and all night) on August 26th, 2009.

UK members and other UK readers of this post should also write to their MP highlighting the case and asking them to sign the following Early Day Motion (Hat Tip: Oy Va Goy!)

That this House notes that 25 June 2009 was the third anniversary of the kidnap of Israeli serviceman Gilad Shalit; is concerned that he is being held a hostage, incommunicado, and is neither permitted to send or receive messages from his family, nor receive visits from the Red Cross or similar organisations; and calls on the Government to redouble its efforts to secure the release from captivity of Gilad Shalit and of other Israeli service personnel who are being held as hostages.

E.g.

Dear X

I am greatly concerned about the case of Gilad Shalit, the Israeli soldier who was kidnapped by Hamas terrorists. In the interests of peace in the Middle East and to show your opposition to the outrageous acts committed by Hamas, will you be signing the following Early Day Motion?:

That this House notes that 25 June 2009 was the third anniversary of the kidnap of Israeli serviceman Gilad Shalit; is concerned that he is being held a hostage, incommunicado, and is neither permitted to send or receive messages from his family, nor receive visits from the Red Cross or similar organisations; and calls on the Government to redouble its efforts to secure the release from captivity of Gilad Shalit and of other Israeli service personnel who are being held as hostages.

Yours sincerely

X
